I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people who are named, or have named their children Nyssa, I started this page as a “My name is Nyssa” resource. Please leave a comment about which Nyssa you are named after.
Thanks.
This page has the following sub pages.

Maryann,
I’ve really enjoyed having the name Nyssa… other than having to deal with people calling me Lisa (because they misheard my name)
Thanks for the compliments. And good luck.
Nyssa

I’ve never met another Nyssa in person, either. That’s why it’s so cool to meet ya’ll virtually!
Nyssa
hi! my name is Nyssa too. pronounced as (nice-ah)
lolz.
Nice to meet another person with the same name as mine.We should form a group. hahaha. I love my name too ’cause it’s rare.
I’m going to put a poll up that asks how people’s names are pronounced. My name sounds like “nee-sa.” Thanks for dropping by.
Just stumbled upon this place. My full name is Anyssa, but have been going by Nyssa forever [nis-uh], that and Nys. Pretty neat. Nyssas ROCK!
Hi! My name is Nyssa too, named after the Doctor Who character. I think this is an awesome idea. I don’t think I have ever met another Nyssa because there are so few of us, but it’s neat that we can find each other online.
I’ve never met another Nyssa in person either… but I’m meeting lots of us online. Yay! Welcome.
Hi my name is Nyssa (niss-ah) I love having a unique name. Its frustrating to get the variations tho! Yay, for all of us unique Nyssa’s.
Hey my name is Nyssa (niss-ah) also…
My mother heard the name Nyssa on the t.v show Dr Who… I love my name as it is unique but it is annoying when people say it wrong…
Hi my name is Nyssa to I thought there was only one nyssa. That was me but i was wrong but that is ok. And i think it is kool and I am only 12 years old. That is kool i am in middle school to be in fact. To live in IL and to talk other nyssa’s to. It is kool to talk to others like me so nice to meet all u nyssa’s goodbye.
Hi Nyssa from IL.
I grew up being the only Nyssa around, too. It’s fun being the only Nyssa in school, but it’s fun meeting other Nyssa’s too. Thanks for dropping by.
This is Nyssa from Oregon. Niss-ah. I have known of two other Nyssa’s in Oregon although I’m not sure their spellings were exactly ours- and I am fairly certain one of them was inspired by my name as our mom did run in similar circles. As a child I hated my name – we moved a lot and grade school was horrible- but my mom told me that one day a man would whisper my name in my ear and I would be so happy I was not just another Jennifer. She was right. Nyssa is memorable. And how cool to find a blog just for us! The genus of the name came be found all across the world. My mom actually found the name in a baby book so how boring is that? She liked the similarity to the Scandinavian tradition of the mischievous gnomish elves with similar names that came at Christmas time and put coal or toys & candy in the clogs. My middle name is Erin which is peace in Irish… so this Nyssa, a “little elf of peace” was born in the summer of 1969 in Eugene, Oregon.
Hello Nyssa from Oregon!
Thanks for your awesome post. I, too, was disappointed when our name ended up in a baby book. And I also remember in grade school that no teachers could ever pronounce my name. I like the Christmas elf connection, especially this month. I think I’m going to go stick stuff in my family’s shoes.
Thanks for dropping by.
Nyssa
Hi Nyssa,
Thank you! Your website is very cool. There are so many young & youngish artist type women who have the coolest blogs. Thanks for taking the time to do the blog…. I have been snowbound and simply going cabin fever crazy so finding your blog and visiting others was a highlight of my weekend. Two of my fave women artist blogs right now are “angry chicken” and “Molly Chicken” (that’s a coincidence)… check ‘em out… super inspiring stuff.
Hi!
Im from New Zealand and have never met another Nyssa here! feel very special to have a whole website made to our name so thanks
Ive told my Dad to check this website out since its because of him i have this name! I do love it even if ppl cant pronounce it and call me Melissa/Lisa/Vanessa!!
We named our 3 y old daughter Kyra Kitana Nyssa (Nyssa comes from the daugther of the vampire god in blade 3).
I love this name but my wife decided that it will be (just) the third name.
Our first daughters name is Aalijah Tabatha Trinity (from Matrix).
So hi to all other nyssa’s here
Named my daughter Nyssa. My wife and I stumbled upon it in a website while looking for a baby name and we both instantly loved it. Hello to all the Nyssa’s out there.
spelled diffrent but it was the vampire princess’s name in blade 3 thats where i got my daughters name from but plzzzz dont tell me EX LOL
my name is nyssa and i love the show doctor who. No wonder! Ibet no one really takes the time to read these or reads the first few than stops maybye im wrong but its soooooooooooooooooooooo cool that so many people have the same name and to 21 mark hello back to you i am 11 years old!
Hello!
I have never met another Nyssa in real life but I have met quite a few online
I am also named Nyssa after the Doctor Who character. My Dad is a big sci-fi geek and loved the show in the 80s (he actually loves the new one too). He jokingly told my mom that they should name me Nyssa and she said, “Only if you can find it in a baby book!” thinking that it wasn’t there. She was wrong and here I am with a unique name that I LOVE
My parent’s heard the name on Doctor Who, but also wanted to give me a “nature” name. When they told my grandpa they wanted to name me after a tree, and he said, “How about Nyssa?” and that sealed the deal.
My name is Nyssa, too. My mom read it in a book when she was pregnant.
As it turns out, it was the scientific name to a Black Gum tree. But at that time, she didn’t know it. I found that out when I was in high school. I was the only Nyssa around.
I also found out later that it is Greek. And it means the beginning of the end. A Nyssa out in California told me that. She googled her name (of course her name being Nyssa) and my info came up. She was so excited to find another Nyssa. I think that is too cool.
And then some time later some friends of mine came across a framed print with Nyssa and the meaning. They bought it for me because they thought it fit me to a T. Here it goes:
Nyssa
From Nyssa, a name of Greek origin,
Meaning “beginning”
Convinced of the innate goodness of mankind
Is never parted from loved ones who are in her heart
Knowing a friend creates a new world within her
Believes in living every day completely
Brings joy to the lives of those around her
A person who can enjoy the innocent smile of a child
What a wonderful friend to have in time of need!
My name is Nyssa, and I picked it myself about 7 years ago. I’ve tried so many different names, from Linda, Dora, Natasha and so many others, but after doing some research on the net finding names, I know that I’d stick with ‘Nyssa’ for the rest of my life, when I first saw it, from the Greek name list. It represents a new start, and I loved it.
Same here that people always misread my name ‘Lisa’, but .. well well..
my name is Nyssa. My dad got it off of doctor who as well. i thought i was the only person in the world with this name and a dad wierd enough to name me it. if anyone actually watches that show he also named my sister Tegan. it was wired though someone called my job yesterday saying they found a receipt in their sons car and my name was at the top (the cashiers name print out on the reciept) but this lady called and said her name was nyssa too and that she wants to come to my job and meet me tomarrow. so weird right. but kinda exciting.
My parents actually read the name in a baby book and thought it sounded good. It apparently means something like “end of the journey” and they thought it fitting since I was supposed to the be the last of 4 kids.
Rereading the above comments, people are saying it means “beginning”… though I think my parents were somehow influenced by the definition but now I’m a little confused as to how… haha
Yep my name is Nyssa(niss-ah) too. And my mom named after Nyssa from Doctor Who too. She also named my sister Peri and if she had had a boy she wouldve named him Adric. I live in Oregon, though she didnt find out there was a Nyssa, Oregon untill after i was born lol. Ive also never met another Nyssa and have gotten very used to re-stating my name and spelling it
My husband and I named our daughter Nyssa (Nee-sah). She is now five and we have never run across another Nyssa until just recently. We went to the local library and checked out the book Owl Moon. The illustrator, John Schoenherr, had a dedication in the front of the book to his granddaughter Nyssa. If you look at the book, there is also a page with the pine trees where the name Nyssa is secretly written under the pines. We think it’s an awesome name! We named our daughter after the pure blood vampire in Blade II (not III). We did research the name and love that it’s meaning is ‘beginning’ in Greek. To all the Nyssas out there…you have a beautifully unique name!
Hi my name is also Nyssa and i’m only 11, i wanted to see if my name was a website and i found this, i have met another Nyssa but theirs is with an ‘I’. My name is like (Niss-ah), my parents think its a good name to have. once i saw a number plate with Nissa on it my mine is spelt with a ‘y’. my parents named me nyssa because it means fairy, and elves, and they liked it, its like i’m their little fairy. I though the name Nyssa wasn’t common but now i feel like it kind of is. I’ve read all of your comments and i hope you like mine. I really like my name thank you for reading.
This is so cool ^-^ I’m over here in NC, but yeah my ‘rents named me for the meaning…it was in a book, so that’s rather lame. but I really do like the originality of it, I think it adds to my personality.
and I find it AMAZING that it was used in the old Doctor Who! I’m an avid fan of the newer version.
My girlfriend’s name was Nyssa. She died this past May 09. I really miss her and I think I might name my daughter (if I have one) Nyssa. It is the most beautiful name ever. Hello to all the other Nyssas.
My name is Nyssa. Pronounced Nee-Sah. I wasn’t named for any of the usual reasons. My dad was stuck in traffic way before he met my mom, and the Nissan truck infront of him was missing the last “n”. He emmediately fell in love with the name Nissa. He informed his mother that when/if he had a daughter, he would name her Nissa. His mother responded that he would never find a woman crazy enough to name her daughter Nissa. My mother was never fond of her mother-in-law, and chose my name from spite. After they did some research, they chose the spelling “Nyssa” because it means “beginning” in Greek, and as their first child I was the beginning of their family.
Imagine having to reiterate that story everytime someone comments on your unique name!
Hi, my dad also named me after Nyssa of Dr. Who. He also chose that name to rhyme with my mom’s name Nida and my aunt Nipa. Nyssa is also a thai name (I’m half thai), means “night”. And I was born at night!
Hi, My name is Nyssa and I was named after the Doctor Who character and I love my name. I have never met another Nyssa.
Hi My name is Nyssa too except I was named after an old mexican movie it was black and white and the lead actress was a dancer named Nyssa. I tried looking for it online but couldn’t find it. Does anyone know the title of it? My late aunt named me so I love my name, I mean our name
Wow! You’re the first Nyssa that I’ve heard about being named after an old Mexican movie – too cool! All the Nyssa’s need to start researching to find this movie… let’s find it!
Thanks for visiting.
Nyssa
Amazing! I never knew there were so many Nyssa’s out there!
I am 56 and was named for Nyssa Sylvatica, the tupelo tree. It’s very nice to see how many people like the name and I think maybe it is a pretty name – hadn’t really thought so before.
It has some interesting meanings, like “the beginning” or goal in Greek, Christmas angel in Danish, elf in Scandinavian, or the Thai meaning (night) – thanks for posting that. Don’t know anything about Dr. Who, though.
This is an awesome site! I love it! My name is Nyssa (Nis-ah) and I was named after the Dr. Who character. My dad is totally in to Sci-Fi (I wached Star Trek instead of Barney…), but I have loved having a unique name, it’s definantly a conversation starter!
Thanks. I don’t know the title. My name is Nyssa Althea and the lead actress in the movie was named Nyssa Althea so I hope that helps. Our name means goal in greek so that’s pretty cool. Maybe that’s why I have so many goals in life.
Thank you. I hope someone has heard of the movie
Of Course my name has always been Nyssa. I’ve never heard or met of another Nyssa until I researched my name and found this website. I am the first child in my family. So when my parents found out Nyssa meant “beginning” They knew it was fate! I’m so gald another Nyssa exsits!!!!! love ya.
Years before the birth of my daugher, I heard the name in a sci-fi movie, Blade II. For those who don’t know it is a comic book based movie about a vampire hunter. Nyssa (Nee-sah) was the daughther of the self proclaimed king of vampires making Nyssa the princess. I really liked the name, and said then and there that my first daughter would be named that. All fathers think of their girls as their princess, but I don’t like the prissy stuck up kind. So when I saw this particular princess was a worrior, tough and yet very beautiful, delicate, I fell in love with the name. Now I’ve fallen in love with the newest Nyssa in the world and my princess is beautiful! I wanted to know what other meanings her name held and they are many, in different languages, spanning from “Begining” in Greek to “End” in Latin, and others. The more I learn the happier I am with my choice and the more amazing I know my girl will be, more so than she already is
Nain, thank you for leaving such a beautiful comment! And we all warmly welcome the “newest Nyssa!”
hello my name is as well nyssa like (knee-suh) nd my dad got my name from a book he was reading i think it was a conan book so he says hmm but i am 16 nd i absolutly love my name except when they call me lisa anyssa or nissan lol nd im the omly person i know with the name nyssa
oh and hello all you other nyssas
Hey, Conan-book-named Nyssa!
Welcome. We all need to research the Nyssa-Conan connection. Every time I meet someone new, I have to say, “No… it’s not Lisa, it’s Nyssa…” Once, I said, “Uh, it’s Nyssa.” And they said, “Anissa?” Ha! I’ve also used the “It’s like Nissan, but without the last N, and spelled totally different.” Good luck and be prepared with the “where did your name come from?” speech. (Which I think is cool, because then, people always remember your name!)
Welcome, Conan-Nyssa.
Re: The Conan-Nyssa connection
The character of Nyssa turns up in the Conan novel, Conan & The Spider God written by L Sprangue Du Camp, & published in November 1980, as a witch that Conan has to save from being burnt at the stake for her witchcraft , in return for information necessary for him to complete his quest to save Zenobia, his wife from a nasty fate…
The book itself is notable for being the first original Post- Robert E Howard Conan work, as previous works were either based on incomplete Conan stories that Howard had abandoned, for various reasons, namely ill health
Alternatively, they were reworked King Kull, or Kane stories originally set in other time periods to that of Conan…
(King Kull was set before Conan’s “Hyborian Age” in Atlantis, while the Kane stories were set in North America, during the early 1600′s…).
I hope this helps, Conan-Nyssa…
Thanks Conan-Nyssa for the great information on the Conan-Nyssa connection. Every Thanksgiving holiday, my family and I sit down and watch the movie, “Conan the Barbarian.” It is actually a really enjoyable movie, with fantastic movie and action.
I will check out the book that you mentioned, “Conan & the Spider God.”
Thanks again.
Hey! My name’s Nyssa! I was named because well that’s a name my parent’s liked. It’s a nice name and I’m proud of it!
HEY. My name is Nyssa too! I’ve never met another Nyssa and I really want to. I hope I will meet one in the future!
My daughter’s name is Nissa. Everybody mispronounces her name as Neeeessa. Children automatically know how to pronounce her name, and correct the adults. Ha ha! Her name was chosen from a baby name website. From the website, it means playful little elf, and that she is. : )
There is so many Nyssas. How cool! I have got To meet one of you guys! I love to act! and my name was from doctor who also. Who knew there was so many Nyssas!!!!
hi my name is nyssa and I am 7yrs old and I like my name so much it makes me want to scream. My mommy said my daddy liked my name from the movie the blade 2 and when she seen the meaning she loved it!
This is so beautiful, and such an honorable thing to do to our name! I have had to point to my knee and then mimic sawing a tree down so many times.
Hello all you folks named Nyssa! My uncles, grandmother and cousins live and farm in Nyssa Oregon. Nyssa was founded and named by the Greeks who lived in the area. The city was named after St Gregory of Nyssa. St Gregory was a Christian who lived in Egypt. Nyssa is a place in Egypt. St Gregory was a Bishop in the early Christian church before there were denominations. There were no denominations not even a Roman Catholic denomination as there are today.
I grew up on a farm at ….Cairo junction. The Greeks named that one too.
We named our daughter Nyssa in honor of my grandmother (of Norwegian descent) , who every year at Christmas would create a sweet little scene using figurines and fun household items, including souvenirs from Norway of fairies and trolls. The hero and heroine – bobble head dolls- would traverse their way through the scene as she told the story (a new installment each year!) Nisse in her stories were kind and spirited and clever and strong and a bit wild, all characteristics we admire and have in our beautiful girl. Also, I had read somewhere that one of Dionysis’ (god of wine and debauchery) mothers was called Nyssa, and any mom that can appreciate and weather that kind of storm is a great namesake.
My parents named me nyssa because it means begining and i was the first child.
Sarah,
Thank you for dropping by! That was a lovely story about your grandmother and the kind, spirited, clever & wild Nisse’s! You made my day with that story!
I thought my name was one-of-a-kind; it truly is and I love having it!! The way I’m researching it has been on Google and now Facebook. What a great name club to be a part of and to see all that it represents! God Bless all the Nyssa’s!!
my name is Nyssa. I always thought i was the only one, i didn’t have a problem wih that though haha. I love my name. its so unique and has so many different meanings behind it in so many different cultures. I’m proud to be named Nyssa.
…. now my only problem is, now that Nyssa is already taken, what do i name my daughter…. 3 more months to figure it out.
Hi I am Nyssa (Nee-sah) and I was named after a singer, my parents had met and they went to my dads work picnic and they had a band their playing and the singer introduced herself and said her name was nyssa, and my parents were like “If we have a girl we will name her Nyssa.” I live in Washington and am the youngest of three children, I am 12 and go to middle school. I play the piano, the cello and used to do gymnastics and dance and I want to go back to gymnastics. I cannot believe there are so many people named Nyssa, I mean I have heard of people named nyssa but they were spelled neesa. I love hearing comments from people like me, thankyou for putting up this web site Nyssa.
My daughter’s name is Nyssa. She was so excited about this web site that she was dying to leave a reply. That was yesterday and it showed up for awhile as number 61. Today it is gone. Why? She was really looking forward to a reply of some sort.
Hello my name is of course also Nyssa (Nee-sah), I was named by my father…he got my name off of this movie called the forbidden dance from the 80s hehee <3
I can’t believe it when people mispronounce my name! Is it that hard?
i’m first born too!
Nyssa,
Good luck on finding the perfect name.
I think you should name your daughter Nyssa Jr.!
Roger,
Sorry about that! I’m not sure what happened but I got her quote back up. Nyssa, Welcome back! I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you are so involved in music and gymnastics. Maybe one day you’ll write a song about your name. And I wonder if the singer Nyssa will ever show up. Thanks for dropping by.
Lol! I’ve seen the movie called the Forbidden Dance (unsurprisingly, it is not a very good movie). The whole time I watched it, I kept asking my friends, “Are they calling her Nyssa!!?” We stayed to watch the credits and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that the character’s name was actually Nyssa!! It was awesome!
My name is pronounced Niss-uh named after Doctor Who. My parents almost named my sister Teagan. People usually say “Nice-uh” or “Nessa”. I get “Nessa” a lot. They think it’s short for Vanessa. To the girl in IL, I grew up there too. Never met another Nyssa in person.
Hello everyone =)
My name, much like many of yours, is Nyssa (Pronounced like Melissa). I felt that it was necessary to comment because this is such an awesome website. I’m 17 from Illinois. It’s ridiculous, but I always thought that I was the only Nyssa out there. It is amazing to see how many other people has the same unique name as me. I, obviously, have never met another Nyssa. It is lovely to meet you all =) <3
Hey!
My father and mother put 3 names in a hat; Nyssa, Teigan and Diana and Nyssa they got!!! Or should I say ‘I’ got!!
I’m proud of my name but yes, mis-pronounciations are frustrating. It really isn’t that difficult.
i’ve heard it means ‘Goal’, ‘Beginning’ and even ‘Woman doctor’ in Arabic so god knows – its boootiful none the less.
x
My name is Nyssa also. I am 10 years old and live in Southern CA. I am grateful I have such a unique name but it is sad that I cannot find a mug, necklace or keychain with my name on it. I am very creative and love to do “voices”. I am a middle child. My parents named me this because they liked the meaning- beginning. I am irritated that most people can’t say my name right. Even after I tell them like 10 times how to say my name. My soccer coach said my name like Lisa the WHOLE season. She could hear my family saying my name right but still called me Neesa. Luckily I have good friends who help correct the wrong sayers. I love my name!
Hey there…. My name is pronounced as Nissa, though it’s spelt Nisaa. Most people pronounce it as Neesa which irks me a bit but I’ve gotten accustomed to it. I’m actually more surprised when they get it right the first time! Up until now, I was the only person I knew with this name. It’s quite a unique one and I’m glad we all share it
Oh, and I also hate it when I tell people my name is Nisaa and then their response is, ‘Like the car?’ :/ Lol
My name is Nyssa (knee-suh).
It used to be Tonessa (tuh-knee-suh). Named after a cross between my mom’s name and my bio-dad’s name, Tony and Theresa.
All throughout school i went by Nessa (knee-suh), when I was nine my step dad adopted me and I legally changed it to Nyssa.
I found out after I turned 16 that it meant a new beginning, and I realized how perfect my name was for me.
I wouldn’t change my name for anything in the world! I love my name, and I hope all the Nyssa’s out there love it just as much!
my name nyssa 2 but i hate when people mispronounce it but i was named after nyssa in hebrew so my name mean friendly fairy. its awesome everyone says its so pretty and i only 11 in 2011
I named my daughter Nissa. I know this isn’t the common spelling, but I thought people would try to pronounce it “Nice-a” Her name is pronounced “Niss-ah”, but because we live in the southwest, everyone says “Neesa”. Drives me nuts. Her middle name is Lynn. Nissa Lynn sounds very nice together. She was named after the Dr Who traveling companion.
i chose the name for the dr who character. a princess with curly brunette hair, who had a boyfriend. my mom would let me stay up late to watch the show. she even went with me when i legally changed my name to nyssa
Wow! That’s really cool that you got to choose your name! The Nyssa in Dr. Who is a very popular character. Welcome!
Okay soooooo … My name’s Nyssa! & I’m a HUUU-YUUUGE anime fan ! If there’s any other “Nyssas” like me out there then hit up my email. Im 16 & I love Gir. ^-^
My Name is Nyssa Too! I was named this because my mom was reading a baby book and I kicked when she said Nyssa so now I am Nyssa. I like being named Nyssa it’s orignal and everyone loves it. The only problem is it takes up to a year sometimes before people understand how to say my name. I don’t see why it’s so complicated for some people but Iv’e had a teacher for 3 years now and she still can’t pronounce my name. I pronounce it Niss-ah
hi all of you Nyssas. I’m also Nyssa. Ta-Da!!!!!!!!
I live in SoCal and I’m 10 years old also like Nyssa #74.
I love ice skating.
Hey all you Nyssa’s!! My name is Nyssa too!! Its pronounced
Nee-sah…my parents came across the name Nyssa from the movie Blade 2. They could not agree on a name htey both liked, they had gone through Isabella and Gabriella and went to see this movie when my mom was about months along with me and my dad loved it!! They ended up compromising with Maribella as my middle name instead. I love how my first name means “begining” in Greek and my middle name means “beautiful” in French. It truley does reflect my unique personality. I love ballet and singing. I love my name Nyssa and I love the story behind it….Its nice to see so many amazing women and girls with my name =)
My paerents named me nyssa because of blade 2 if that movie did not come out my name would not of been nyssa. I never knowen there was so many nyssa’s in this wold
HI, Well i always thought that there werent too many more nyssa’s out there and i always get asked if it is short for something, people think that my name is pretty and it’s unuseual, i have also met another nyssa when i was 10yrs old and she was 5, i thought that was fantastic, i always hated my name as people teased me at school about it but as i got older i actully started to like it as its is a name you don’t hear offen
Hey there fellow Nyssa’s. I am not sure where my parents got my name. Growing up so many people from teachers to doctors would mispronounce my name, I got use it. I love my name, I love being unique.
ni my name is nyssa…i dont know where my parents ..get mah nym but im so proud of my name because other people,,,especially those new found friends they tell me that i am maybe a nice person as nice as mah name..but sometimes my teachers are confused on how to pronounce mah name,, but they will tell me that mah name is nice and unique…
My name is Nisa (Nee-sah). I’ve never meet another Nisa or Nyssa in my life. It’s so cool to know there are many others. My parents named me after the main character in the movie the Forbidden Dance. Its a really bad movie. But I love my name!
